Amen Dunes - Freedom
Stef
Today, on May 5th, we celebrate freedom in The Netherlands. Exactly 80 years ago the German occupation ended.
Last week in Scotland I was reminded of the country’s long fight for independence, when I learned about a statue of William Wallace from the movie Braveheart, as played by Mel Gibson, in the city of Stirling. The word ‘Freedom’ is written on the base of the statue, referring to the famous quote “they may take our lives, but they’ll never take our freedom”. Because the thing is pretty ugly, and has the face of Mel Gibson, the Scots ridiculed and vandalised it. To protect it, a fence was placed around it. The result: an encased Braveheart figure standing for freedom. Oh, the irony.
Anyway, Amen Dunes made a great album in 2018 called Freedom.
