Black Devil Disco Club - Black Devil Disco Club
Stef
During Christmas, a dinner at a friend’s place ended in dancing in the kitchen and eventually moving to the club for a long night out. One thing that got us going was the record player in that kitchen and the extensive vinyl collection of the owner.
The record that did it for me, and which I played again during the hangover, was Black Devil Disco Club’s first release from 1978. This six-track EP is a contiguous trip down the depths of disco hell. You get taken along on a kick-snare ride with both refreshing and disturbing synthesizer noises and echoing sing-alongs. I was surprised to find out this record is from the 70’s, as many of the sounds can be still be heard in modern dance music today.
The EP was pretty obscure at the time, but got well-deserved attention when it got re-released in 2004. At that point the man behind the project, the French Bernard Favre, started producing again and even made a track with Nancy Sinatra on vocals.
