Discovery Zone - Remote Control
Stef
Do you remember the early days of the internet, when surfing the web sounded like visiting a parallel universe and AI was seen as something with supernatural powers? That’s the vibe I get from listening to JJ Weihl (New York) aka Discovery Zone. Last week I went to her concert in Cinetol, together with fellow Listenings writer Mark, and dear Listenings listener Isa. The setup was amazing, with Discovery Zone standing behind a see-through screen on which nostalgic cyberspace animations were beamed throughout the show. Imagine flying dolphins, geometrical pulsating patterns and lively color streams. A well designed mix between irony and beauty. The whole experience left me feeling excited for a time to come yet already passed.
Even though I bought Discovery Zone’s latest album after the show (fittingly, on CD), I’m recommending you her previous one, Remote Control. Just because I like it better. It has great pop songs and sounds like a trip across the infinite worlds of cyberspace and outer space. Just like The Rah Band’s classic album Past Present & Future from 1985 (free recommendation!).
