Gábor Szabó – 1969
Stef
Last week, Spotify bought WhoSampled. For those who do not know, it’s a massive community-driven database of information on reused music. Spotify says it will add WhoSampled’s data to the platform through a forthcoming “SongDNA” feature. The internet’s busiest music nerd, Anthony Fantano, is concerned about the purchase, most importantly because it might give major labels more power to earn money through credits.
The moments I enjoy samples the most are when I stumble upon the original and it turns out to be better— especially when the original is on an album full of beautiful songs. This happened when I heard Gábor Szabó’s “Stormy”, which you’ll instantly recognise from John Legend’s “Save Room”. Gábor himself is not afraid of reusing music either, as most of the songs on “1969” are covers. As can be read on WhoSampled.
