There are several reasons why I did not want to pick this album today: it’s slightly cheesy, slightly sleazy, easy listening smooth jazz - in many ways the opposite of a fresh-sounding album. So much of it is really ‘of its time’ in a bad way, from the suave ladies’ man -persona of the singer, right down to the terrible title.
But for a few weeks now, I’ve been waking up with melodies from this record playing in my head. I find myself repeating certain lines and rhymes, sometimes out loud. And whenever I leave my house and put on my headphones, it’s been so easy just to put it on again, and again, and again. So, despite all my misgivings, I had no choice but to pick it.
It’s just so incredibly catchy! And sometimes that’s enough. If you’re looking for a polished, stress-reducing 40-minutes, this is the pure product. So mellow, so smooth - it’s lush, honeyed jazz-pop without any discordance or jumpiness, and I’m a little bit addicted to it.
